Magnitude 8 quake rumors not true: Cebu gov't

October 20, 2013
MANILA -- There is no truth to text rumors that a magnitude 8 earthquake will shake Cebu any time soon, the Cebu provincial government said on its Facebook account on Sunday night.

The officer-in-charge of Cebu's Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, Neil Angelo Sanchez, pointed out that there is no instrument yet that can predict earthquakes, and official information about such phenomena can only come from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) and other earthquake monitoring outfits.

"Earthquakes occur everyday with a magnitude of 2.0 or less...barely felt and such seismic waves are recorded in the Richter Magnitude Scale, the instrument used to record seismic activities and its magnitude. As to where, when and its projected magnitude...it cannot be predicted," he said.

The provincial government called on Cebuanos to ignore the text rumors and avoid forwarding them to others to avoid spreading more panic.

"We urge everyone to gather official information from agencies like PHIVOLCS and not from any other unofficial sources. Circulating this text message will not help and can even cause more panic," it said.

As of 7 a.m. Sunday, the NDRRMC said 185 individuals have died from the magnitude 7.2 quake that rocked the Visayas region last Tuesday, with 172 coming from Bohol, 12 from Cebu and 1 from Siquijor.

Chef Jayps sees batchoy as the Pinoy ramen

MANILA – While he is not planning to join Manila’s current ramen craze, Bacolod-born Chef JP Anglo is hoping to upgrade the humble batchoy into the Philippine version of the Japanese specialty.

Anglo, who is more known as “Chef Jayps” from his stint as a judge on “MasterChef Pinoy Edition,” recently opened Sarsa Kitchen + Bar at the Bonifacio Global City, his first restaurant in Metro Manila, which specializes in Negrense cuisine from Iloilo and Bacolod.

“I have this goal na I want to elevate batchoy. I want to elevate a humble dish to …not naman ramen level as that might be too ambitious for now,” he told ABS-CBNnews.com at the opening of Sarsa. “It's sort of like a masterpiece that I want to work on. It's a work in progress and we're getting there.”

Two kinds of batchoy are served at Sarsa: the traditional noodle soup; and a “special” version that includes bone marrow, fresh egg and bacon-cut liempo. Indeed, the special batchoy, which Anglo described as “hearty,” has a deep-flavored broth that’s reminiscent of Japanese ramen but still unmistakeably Pinoy.

Apart from the batchoy, Anglo also gave the Ilonggo specialty molo his own twist. “’Yung filling niya prawn and pork dumpling, parang Chinese style, so it's a Tsinoy molo,” he said, adding that in Bacolod, where he owns two restaurants, Mai Pao and Mu Shu, this molo is served with Hainanese chicken. “But here naman, we serve it with just chicken strips. ‘Yung play niya is the dumplings.”

While Anglo describes his cooking style as “very inventive, creative and playful,” there are some dishes that he would prefer to keep as is.

“If it's inasal, I will not touch it. Maybe the sauce, sige, I'll play. But nandoon pa rin ‘yung essence, I don't want to reinvent the wheel. I'll add a little bit lang,” he said of Sarsa’s inasal which are served in steel skewers for a more modern look.

But Anglo went all-out playful with the lechon kawali, which is served with a choice of two sauces: the more traditional pinakurat coconut vinegar and a sauce made from local tablea chocolate and the Ilonggo fruit batwan.

“That chocolate sauce it's either you like it or you don't and it's okay with us. Just for kicks, just for fun,” he said, adding that he chose to create a native coffee sauce for the thin-cut liempo. “The thin-cut bacon belly, we serve it naman with coffee sauce and burong vinegar. Personally every time I have pork, I dip it immediately in vinegar.”

Anglo said he personally likes putting sauces on his food, which explains the restaurant’s name. “I love putting stuff. I like adding extra garlic, extra spring onions. I like to have a half a bowl of bagoong beside my kare-kare. I would always create these sauces out of nowhere,” he said.

Unlike his fellow judges on “MasterChef Pinoy Edition” Rolando Laudico and Fern Aracama, who both run high-end Filipino restaurants with Bistro Filipino and Aracama, respectively, Anglo chose to keep Sarsa simple and, more importantly, affordable. An order of chicken inasal is priced at only P165, while the special batchoy costs P240.

One of the highly recommended dishes here is the tender lechon baka skewers, served with home-made aioli sauce and priced at P295. There is also his take on the humble tortang talong topped with bits of kesong puti and crispy sardines and served with yummy chili banana ketchup for only P155.

Anglo explained that he wants customers who can eat at Filipino restaurant any time. “It doesn't have to be a special occasion,” he said when asked about Sarsa’s concept. “I also want to serve the office crowd here at the Fort, a place na pwede sila pumunta three times a week.”

He also noted that he isn’t the type who likes fine-dining restaurants. “Every time I eat out, if I go to Europe, I would never eat at fine dining restaurants. Street food palagi, ‘yon ang style ko. I don't want to serve fine dining, I want to serve what I eat so street food, comfort food,” he said. full story

Apple taps Burberry CEO to oversee stores

October 20, 2013
LONDON — Apple said Tuesday that Burberry CEO Angela Ahrendts, who used technology to drive a remarkable turnaround at her luxury fashion house, will take charge of the company’s expansion plans and retail operation.

Ahrendts, who will become a senior vice president at Apple next spring, is credited with helping transform Burberry from an established if stodgy brand known for its iconic trench coats to one of the fashion world’s leading companies. Together with chief creative officer Christopher Bailey, Ahrendts championed melding digital and mobile technology with the runway.

“She shares our values and our focus on innovation, and she places the same strong emphasis as we do on the customer experience,” Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook said in a statement.

Bailey, who will become Burberry CEO on Ahrendts’ departure, live-streamed his catwalk shows to fans worldwide through online channels like Twitter. Shoppers who wanted the runway’s coats, shoes and bags could point and click — staking a claim to the hottest fashions months ahead of the items appearing in stores.

The pair proved a powerful team, with Ahrendts presiding over the head office while Bailey oversaw creative marketing, store design and consumer technology, helping complete a turnaround started by another American executive, Rose Marie Bravo.

Burberry was rewarded with growth, particularly in Asia, where luxury and classic British craftsmanship proved a highly successful combination. The company’s share price has consistently outperformed the FTSE 100 stock index, and she has proved one of country’s most prominent female executives. Source

Burberry on Tuesday reported first-half sales rose 14 percent to 1 billion pounds ($1.6 billion).

The move to Apple Inc. marks another step in the career of Ahrendts, a native of New Palestine, Indiana, who also served as executive vice president at Liz Claiborne Inc. and president of Donna Karan International. source

Death toll in Bohol quake nearing 200

MANILA, Philippines — The death toll from a killer quake in the central Philippines is likely to approach 200 as rescue teams focused on finding dead bodies buried under landslides and fallen structures, an official said Sunday.

A total of 185 deaths have been confirmed so far from the 7.2 quake that shook the tourist island of Bohol on Tuesday, toppling bridges, shattering roads, causing landslides and reducing historic churches to rubble.

Bohol suffered 172 dead alone with over 120 dead from falling structures, said Augusto Escopia, the island’s information officer.

“Our conservative estimate is that there are roughly 180 to 185 dead in Bohol alone,” he told AFP, a day after authorities halted the search for survivors and focused on recovering dead bodies.

The quake also left 13 others dead in the central islands of Cebu and Siquijor, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said.

The recovery of bodies in Bohol will likely last one more week, said Escopia, adding that reports from some hospitals indicated that there were further fatalities to be counted.

There are also nine more missing in Bohol, he added amid fading hopes they would be found alive.

The biggest problem facing the more than 1.2 million residents of Bohol island is the need for shelter after the quake destroyed or damaged many homes, he added.

“They (the residents) are afraid to go home because there are still aftershocks. Some have cracks on their walls. They are still afraid to go inside,” Escopia said.

About 600 kilometers (370 miles) from capital Manila, Bohol is known for its beaches, its rolling “Chocolate Hills,” tiny tarsier primates, and centuries-old Catholic churches, many of which collapsed or sustained heavy damage.

Thousands of people in Bohol have taken to camping out in the open in front of damaged houses and buildings to avoid being crushed in case their buildings collapse further, Escopia said.

Both the government and foreign aid groups have been sending in tents to help residents, he added.

More than 370,000 people were displaced while more than 36,000 houses have been damaged in Bohol due to the quake, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management council said in a statement.

The Philippines lies on the so-called Ring of Fire, a vast Pacific Ocean region where many of Earth’s earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur.

Another spartmate for Manny?

October 20, 2013
MANILA, Philippines - Boxing coach Freddie Roach is considering the possibility of adding another sparmate for Manny Pacquiao, now deep in training in General Santos City for his Nov. 24 fight against Brandon Rios in Macau.

Former two-time world champion Gerry Peñalosa, who’s in General Santos City keeping tabs on Pacquiao’s workouts, said yesterday Roach may send for one more sparring partner from abroad. Peñalosa said Roach might ask his Filipino assistant Marvin Somodio to bring over the sparmate with strength and conditioning coach Gavin McMillan. Somodio and McMillan are arriving from Los Angeles on Wednesday. They will be in the corner of Ruslan Provodnikov when the Russian battles Mike Alvarado for the WBO lightwelterweight title in Denver this morning (Manila time). Somodio confirmed his arrival with McMillan in a text message from Denver and said he will await Roach’s instructions whether or not to recruit another sparmate.

Peñalosa said there may be a need to upgrade the quality of Pacquiao’s sparring partners. At the moment, his sparmates are Liam Vaughan of England, Fredrick Lawson of Ghana and former PABA lightwelterweight champion Dan Nazareno of San Fernando, Pampanga. Marlon Alta, a 5-10 middleweight from General Santos City, was in the rotation previously. Alta is booked to face unbeaten Zac Dunn for the WBC Youth and interim PABA supermiddleweight championships in Victoria, Australia, on Nov. 29.

“Lawson and Vaughan are average but we’re very happy with Nazareno’s performance,” said Peñalosa. “Nazareno fights like Rios and he’s 5-9. Freddie wants another sparring partner like Nazareno so I contacted my friends who found an unbeaten Thai welterweight who’s a regional champion. I think the Thai’s record is 20-0 but I’m not sure. If there’s no one from the US coming to reinforce our pool of sparring partners, maybe, we’ll try the Thai.”

A check on the top Thai welterweights today showed Prawet Singwancha at the head of the list. Singwancha, 36, has a 48-5-2 record, with 27 KOs, and lost a split decision to Jose Alfaro in a bid for the WBA lightweight crown in 2007. The problem is Singwancha is a southpaw and Rios is right-handed so he may not be able to mimic Bam-Bam’s style.

“Vaughan and Lawson are helping out Manny particularly in testing his speed,” said Peñalosa. “But once they get hit by Manny, they start running. Vaughan is tall like Rios who’s 5-8 so it’s good for Manny to get used to a taller opponent. The guy who’s a big help is Nazareno who doesn’t back off and tries to pressure Manny. I think we need one more sparring partner like Nazareno to complete the rotation.”

Pacquiao’s adviser Michael Koncz said training camp is proceeding smoothly. “I can’t tell you if Manny is 70 or 80 or 90 percent ready for Rios,” he said. “All I know is things are working out fine. The camp has been fabulous. The sparring has been great. Everyone’s doing his part. I think Buboy (Fernandez) and Nonoy (Neri) did a super job taking care of Manny before Freddie arrived. Manny’s in great shape. I’m looking forward to a decisive win over Rios.”

Roach flew in with Vaughan, a Liverpool lightmiddleweight with an 8-1 record, including two KOs, last week. Vaughan, 23, is coming off a first round stoppage of Mike Alexander in Glendale, California, last August. He has won five in a row since losing a decision to Robert Dixon in a four-rounder in December 2011. The Liverpool fighter is unbeaten in four outings since transplanting to Los Angeles where he is a regular at Roach’s Wild Card Gym.

Lawson, a 2008 Beijing Olympian, boasts a 21-0 record, with 19 KOs. He’s fresh from a 12-round decision over Georgia’s Giorgi Ungiadze for the IBF International welterweight diadem in Accra last July. Lawson turned pro in March 2011 and that year, posted a 12-0 record, keeping busy at an average rate of one fight a month with two fights in April and two fights in August.

Nazareno, 24, is nicknamed Ironman. His record is 17-10, with 13 KOs. Six of his losses were by 12-round decisions. Last November, Nazareno was stopped in two rounds by Min Wook Kim in an OPBF lightwelterweight title fight in Ansan City. Kim was invited to spar with Pacquiao but declined. Nazareno turned pro in 2006 and although he has lost three of his last four, is far from being a pushover. In 2009, he knocked out Koji Numata in four rounds in Tokyo and a year later, halted Thai Manfa Luksaikongdin in six for the PABA lightwelterweight crown in Ayutthaya. Four of his knockout wins came in the first round. source

Teary-Eyed MVP Santos admits struggle in playing small forward position

October 20, 2013
MANILA - All conference long, PBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) Arwind Santos has been playing uneasily in a task which is a bit distant to his natural power-forward position
A teary-eyed Santos, during a chat with Solar Sports Desk inside their locker room moments after his Petron’s 114-103 Game 5 defeat to San Mig Coffee, has revealed it has been somewhat a struggle for him playing the small forward position this conference.

“Nung huling nag-champion kami, kwatro ako nun. That time, hindi problema ang bola sa akin pati sa rebounds,” said Santos. “Ngayon kasi tres ako kaya hindi mo ako maasahan na kumuha ng rebounds.”
Petron’s last title was the 2011 Governors’ Cup conference where in that season, the 32-year-old Pampanga native dribbler averaged 15.3 points and 10.7 rebounds under then coach Ato Agustin.

Overall this season, Santos has actually tallied career-best averages of 17.4 ppg and 12 rpg. But the Blaze Boosters had two different coaches in Rajko Toroman and Olsen Racela, which meant two different systems the first two conferences.

A dip in Santos’ numbers are evident this conference after he has been apparently asked to play the small forward spot.

In 18 games thus far this tournament, Santos has registered 11.8 ppg and 7.5 rpg.

“Hindi ko alam kailan ang dating ng bola sa akin dahil madalas tumatakbo kami at maraming ikot ng bola kaya nawawala din ako,” revealed Santos.

But Santos reiterated that he is not blaming anyone regarding his slump, specifically this Finals where he’s been averaging eight points and 2.8 rebounds in five games.

“Siympre tao lang tayo. Naapekuthan tayo sa game kaya siguro kailangan ko mga kasama ko. Sana tulungan nila ako at magtiwala pa din,” said Santos.

“Sana bukas sa ensayo hindi ko maipakita kasi ayoko silang mahawa.”

Santos also admits the MVP award which was given to him in last Friday’s Leo Awards before Game Four at the MOA Arena could have been a factor since.

“Pakiramdam ko parang naging distraction yung MVP. Talagang nilalabanan ko emosyon ko,” said Santos. Source

Angel Locsin: Will ‘Darna’ Movie Make Her Shine Once More?

October 11, 2013
Angel Locsin to play Darna once more. This time in a Star Cinema movie that is set to release in 2014.
FINALLY, ANGEL LOCSIN’S career seems ready to soar high once more as she will be flying again as ‘DARNA’ in a movie that is set to come out early 2014.

The Superheroine character that made her into a showbiz personality she is today will be having a grand comeback in the Philippines’ air. This time on big screen.

When Star Cinema executive Malou Santos revealed that Locsin will be playing ‘Darna’ in a movie, her fans couldn’t help but be excited for the actress, who seems to have been (somehow) seated for a long time on a bench now. Though she has been doing a regular Saturday show, “Toda Max” for two years already, and has had a few movies last year, it is important to note that the star in Locsin was not as bright as that of other Kapamilya top stars who almost have no time for rest as TV series, shows, and movies come one after the other, if not almost overlapping.

Locsin lost the Superstar status along with the crown she’s been wearing on her head when she was still on GMA 7 as their prime time queen. On ABS-CBN, Locsin has always been fighting for a top spot or at least a share onspotlight, after being given two hit TV series with the network’s top leading men, Piolo Pascual and John Lloyd Cruz. A sacrifice that she had to make in order to broaden her audience and snatch the top acting awards she has now on her shelves.

The new movie is definitely a bold try for the Kapamilya network for her to regain the title as the ‘Ultimate DARNA’ snatched by her biggest rival (as per fans, though they are friends in real life), Marian Rivera, whose career soaredthe highest when she took over Locsin’s throne on GMA Network. Rivera was touted as the prettiest lady to playDarna, according to rights owner of the Mars Ravelo character. But it was Locsin’s 2007 Darna that set the highestrecord in terms of TV ratings.

Well, Locsin is a star that can’t be easily ignored, a beauty that can’t be easily forgotten. In fact, though she was last seen on big screen in the controversial film, “One More Try” last year, she managed to bag several acting awards asBest Actress (Star Award and FAMAS Award) for it. Her film with Cruz, ‘Unofficially Yours’ is also a box office success.

Will she shine the brightest again as Darna? Will she manage to take the ‘Queen’ status on ABS-CBN as well? What do you think, folks? Full Story

Devina Dediva Apologizes, But Is She Sincere?

October 11, 2013
Devina Dediva, the Facebook user who maligned Filipinos after Megan Young was crowned Miss World 2013 in September, apologized to the beauty queen and the Filipinos through her Twitter account.

This was done after she apparently lost her job because of the racist comments she made against Megan and the rest of the Filipinos. In her comments, she said she couldn't understand why Filipinos will ever win a beauty pageant crown when they are poor, uneducated and smells like the comfort rooms they usually clean.

She also tagged Filipinas as being maids. However, Devina is working as an assistant teacher in a school run by Filipino supervisors. Her racist remarks have apparently caused her job. Netizens, particularly Filipinos, also criticized her for such comments.

Now that Devina has apologized to the Filipinos, will the issue finally end? Not likely. Filipinos are still enraged over the remarks she made, and she may as well just close her social networking sites for the meantime if she doesn't want to hear negative remarks against her.

Here's her tweets..you'd be the judge!

But she seems confused..

Is John Prats Set To Marry Isabel Oli?

October 11, 2013
The entertainment industry may soon be witness to another wedding. That is, if a recent interview with John Prats is any indication. According to Prats, his girlfriend Isabel Oli is ready to marry. “I know she's ready anytime. Siguro that's what I like about her. Hindi siya kagaya ng ibang artista ngayon na focused sa career. Maganda sa kanya kasi nakikita niya ang sarili niya to be a housewife,” he said in an interview during a press conference for the upcoming show “I Dare You” which he stars in. I know she’s ready anytime. Maybe that’s what I like about her. She is not like other actresses who are focused on their careers. What’s great about her is that she sees herself as a housewife.

If Oli is ready to be a wife, is Prats ready to be a husband?

Asked about this, Prats did not reveal anything other than he does not want to talk about definite things as it may anticipate his proposal. “Secret. Baka ma-preempt 'yung proposal ko. I really want it to be special for her,” the actor said. [Secret. (If I say something), it may preempt my proposal. I really want it to be special for her.] “Yung engagement bawal pagusapan at sorpresa sa kanya 'yon pero getting married, yes (napag-uusapan).

That's why I know she's ready anytime,” the actor added, according to ABS-CBN News. [The engagement is off limits and it will be a surprise for her. But getting married, yes, (we have talked about it). That’s why I know she’s ready anytime.

When asked when the two are tying the knot, Prats answered with an indefinite “Not really long, not really long.” So as it stands, it appear Prats is certain he will marry Oli. As to why, The Kapamilya talent gave a lot of reasons why the Kapuso actress and host is the one for him. “Parang mas kontente ako ngayon, wala na akong ibang hinahanap, wala akong reklamo at mas focused ako sa work ngayon kasi alam ko nandiyan siya to support me. Never kong na-experience na hina-harass niya ako for time,” he said.

I’m more content now and I am not looking for anything else. I have no complaints and I am more focused on work because I know she is there to support me. I never experienced that she harasses me for time.

“Alam niya kasi na siguro ako 'yung lalaki eventually I will be the one who will be there financially for my family, that's why sobrang support niya sa akin,” Prats added. [Maybe she knows that I am the man in the relationship and eventually, I will be the one who will be there financially for my family. That’s why she has all the support for me.

As for what he has done for his girlfriend, Prats said, “Si Isabel kasi mabilis mag-worry, small things. Siguro 'yung natulong ko sa kanya, na lagi positive lang. Lahat talaga may pagsubok pero after that lahat malalagpasan mo. Kaya naging positive siyang tao because of that. Palagi na siyang palangiti, before kasi palagi siyang serious.

Ngayon nalabas 'yung kengkoy side niya.” [It’s easy to get Isabel to worry even about just small things. Maybe what I have helped her with is to stay positive. Challenges come but after that, you’ll surpass everything. That’s why she became a more positive person. She now smiles often unlike before when she was always serious. Now she has let her funny side out. Full Story

Wally Bayola Reportedly Changes Name And Appearance When Going Out Of House

October 10, 2013
When will Wally Bayola ever recover from the trauma, humiliation, and shame brought about by his recent leaked sex video scandal? It seems that the time has not yet arrived. Until now, the comedian is still in hiding because obviously, he wants to avoid the prying and judgmental eyes of people.

If reports are true, Wally could be at the darkest times of his life. To make matters worse, he reportedly has to come in disguise whenever he goes out of his house so that people would not recognize him. According to some sources, Wally has grown hair, moustache, and beard to obtain a totally different look.

Sources claim that the comedian even changes his name as well as the pitch of his voice whenever he goes out. He reportedly does so in hope that no one could ever tell that he is the infamous comedian. This may indicate that Wally is not yet ready and courageous to face the public after the humiliating experience he recently had.

Unfortunately, Wally has to return to his work soon. According to reports, his supportive wife has already called GMA-7 to inform the management that her husband is ready to resume work (as part of weekend game show ‘Celebrity Bluff’). Wally’s family is currently in crisis because he has a daughter who is undergoing treatment for cancer.

For those who are asking when Wally would return to co-hosting ‘Eat Bulaga,’ the answer would be on the negative. TAPE, Inc, the producer of the noontime show has reportedly declared that it may take some more time before they allow the comedian to resume his work.

This could be because ‘Eat Bulaga’ is and will always be a show for the family. The producers must be worried that putting Wally back to the show might turn off not just some viewers but more importantly, a number of advertisers. Full Story

Willie Revillame Finally Admits That Tv5 Axed ‘wowowillie’

October 10, 2013
Willie Revillame is at it again. After his constant denials that his noontime show ‘Wowowillie’ was cancelled by TV5 due to poor ratings, he has finally admitted that it was the truth. It could be just a slip (again) of his big fat mouth, but he has again confirmed that in show business, there is no smoke if there is no fire.

In May, when the show’s cancellation was reported, he denied reports that TV5 decided to axe it. He claimed that it was him who decided to discontinue the show in October when he ends his network contract. That time, he said he wanted to take a break in showbiz because he has become too busy. Now, he is eating his past words.

The days of his noontime show are numbered. ‘Wowowillie’ will bid its loyal viewers (if there are any more out there) goodbye when it airs it final telecast on Saturday (October 12). And just like the old Willie, he seems unable to control his temper and his mouth in making revelations even on air.

Last week, Willie revealed that the TV5 management pulled out utility services in his studio, Wowowillie Studio, formerly Delta Theater in Quezon City. He disclosed that the studio is being maintained by his own staff because the janitors and other maintenance personnel were pulled out by the network months ago. Continue Reading

No immediate replacement for ‘Wowowillie’–TV5 exec

October 10, 2013
Currently focused on strengthening its primetime and weekend programming, TV5 is in no hurry to replace Willie Revillame’s “Wowowillie,” which will air its final episode on Saturday.

Revillame’s contract with TV5 expires on Tuesday.

“It would be a loss for fans of Willie. But, right now, we want to build TV5 brick by brick. We’re doing that by boosting our primetime and weekend shows,” TV5 president and chief executive officer Noel Lorenzana told the Inquirer at the network’s trade launch at the NBC Tent in Taguig City.

Lorenzana said he was unsure whether TV5 could already go toe-to-toe with ABS-CBN’s and GMA 7’s more established noontime shows, “It’s Showtime” and “Eat Bulaga!,” respectively.

“We’ll compete in the areas [where] we can and then take it from there,” Lorenzana said. “Mahirap makipagsabayan. Hindi naman kami nagmamagaling na kaya naming lahat. And, like I’ve said, we’ll have to build pillars first.”

TV5’s chief content officer for entertainment Wilma Galvante added that they would not be producing a new noontime variety show “anytime soon or in the near future.” “We’ll probably air movies or Koreanovelas in the meantime,” she said.

“Wowowillie,” which has occupied TV5’s noontime slot since Jan. 26, is one of the many incarnations of Revillame’s controversial variety show.

Revillame started with “Wowowee” (2005-2010) on ABS-CBN. And then, after his unceremonious departure from the Kapamilya network in 2010, he initially occupied TV5’s primetime slot with “Willing Willie,” later renamed “Wil Time Big Time” (2010-2013).

Revillame’s shows on TV5 were coproduced by his own production outfit, Wil Productions, Inc. Continue Reading

MANILA, Philippines – Miss World 2013 Megan Young was brought to tears when she finally arrived back home in the Philippines Thursday after becoming the first Filipino to win the prestigious beauty pageant.

Wearing her crown and sash, Young arrived around 4:20 p.m. on Cathay Pacific flight CX 919 from Hong Kong and was greeted by hundreds of staff of the Manila International Airport Authority.

Speaking before the media, Young could not hold back tears of joy as she said she was “overwhelmed” by the reception of the Filipino people.

“It’s an amazing feeling,” Young managed to say before shedding tears of joy. “It’s an overwhelming feeling, how warm I was met here in the Philippines.”

“These are tears of joy. I’m just really happy to be home and just really happy to see everyone,” she said.

Young is coming from her first tour of London since being crowned Miss World 2013 in Bali, Indonesia last September 28.

Young will proceed to Solaire resorts for a press conference and then will perform the ceremonial toss between the game of Houston Rockets and Indiana Pacers in Mall of Asia Arena in the evening.

“I will be with my family and friends; most of my personal time will be spent with them,” she said.

“It has not yet sunk in actually, I’m still overwhelmed by everything that is happening with me right now,” Young said. Read Full Story

UAAP Finals Game 3 preview: Cheers or Tears?

October 09, 2013
By Pio Garcia - philstar.com

I did say the UAAP Finals was going to a Game 3, didn’t I?

Well, it’s a good throwback to that ’99 series between DLSU and UST. If I remember right, Dino Aldeguer made the shot of his career against Aric del Rosario’s mighty Tigers, who feasted on everyone but dropped the last two games to lose the title. Then, seven years later, UST did a reverse, upending Ateneo in come-from-behind-fashion.

Is DLSU raring for another come-from-behind feat?

Or is UST going to rewrite history?

One way or another, I’ll be thanking the basketball gods for giving me one hell of a show on Saturday.

I have to throw out the stats, scenarios, Xs and Os, and all the dilly-dallying. It’s the last game of the season. And I’m pretty sure it won’t be like that Ateneo-UE decider that was really one-sided. We’re in for a tight, heart-stopping action folks. It ain’t for the weak.

What to expect?

Well, for one, will Karim Abdul and Paolo Pe shrug off the whistles and just play on? It was evident that Abdul got called for ticky-tack and let-go fouls, but he let it get into his head every trip down. I mean, come on big man, stop complaining and just flat-out ball. Play through the calls. That’s what champions do. Aljon Mariano should also come to play. Yes, he’s been playing through injuries all season long, but this is crunch time sir, time to suck it up and lay it all out on the hard court if you want to celebrate #06in76.

As for DLSU, they should pray that Norbert Torres and AVO have their A-games on like last Saturday. A combined 29 points and 24 rebounds ain’t squat. Those guys put in the work and exposed UST’s very thin frontline outside of Pe and Abdul. It certainly doesn’t hurt that Jeron Teng, the King Archer, hung 19 points and nine boards of his own on Kevin Ferrer. Just the tally from those three frontliners alone, that’s a whopping 48-point, 35-rebound output. That’s more than half of the points on the board and around 80 percent of your team rebounds. That, in other words, is a total beatdown ladies and gentlemen.

However, the bright side for the Tigers is that they don’t give up. They go down guns blazing, exemplified by King Tiger, Jeric Teng, who burned DLSU and took names en route to his 28-point night. But he seriously lacked help outside of Abdul, who we have said has been complaining about ticky-tack calls instead of just balling like no tomorrow. I’m expecting Jon Sheriff to step up once again as he has been the barometer of how UST ran in the second round. This guy has been a great +/- for his team. When he’s directing traffic, the Tigers know where to go as opposed to when he’s sitting on the bench due to foul trouble. Continue Reading

Lin supports Pacquiao's newfound faith, hopes for Howard's integration in Houston

October 08, 2013
Jeremy Lin takes part in a Rockets practice session. Roehl Niño Bautista, GMA News

As an Evangelical Christian, Houston Rockets point guard Jeremy Lin said he supports Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao's efforts in publicly voicing his faith.

"Everyone has the right to be themselves," said Lin, upon hearing of Pacquiao's own outspokenness with regards to his religious life. "I think for him to talk about what's important to him, I don't think anybody should be able to say what he can or can't say who he is as a person. As long as he's trying to be real, that's fine."

Lin himself is a fervent Evangelical Christian, and attributes his NBA success to his own faith and trust in God, as documented in the film "Linsanity" which was screened at the Sundance Film Festival.

He said that he's thankful that people cared about his story and drew inspiration from his unlikely NBA journey. "Hopefully they can see through the story and chase their dreams and their passions, regardless of their race, their size, their gender, or whatever," said Lin.

Lin added that his own faith keeps him grounded "It's why I do what I try to do, and try to be the person who I try to be," he said. "It's a constant battle. We're human, and there's that constant element of pride that you have to fight. I just want to be as much of myself as I can, and be as real and as authentic as I can be."

Regarding the upcoming basketball season, Lin said he's looking forward to incorporating one-time Laker Dwight Howard into Houston's offense, adding though that they're pressed for time.

"We got some great pieces and I think we really have a chance to contend for a championship. We're just at the beginning of the journey and we're all just trying to get to the point where we're on page," he said.

Lin added that the Rockets are hoping Howard can help them get more open three-pointers and draw fouls, while he personally wants to sync well with him in terms of running the pick and roll. Continue Reading

Pacquiao will be ready – Roach

October 08, 2013
Pacquiao will be ready – Roach by Jonas Terrado - Manila Bulletin

Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach has vowed to turn Manny Pacquiao into a human wrecking ball for his crossroads fight with young tiger Brandon Rios on Nov. 24 in Macau.

Roach said in an HBO interview over the weekend that he is aching to fly to the Philippines to hook up with Manny Pacquiao and kick off the most crucial phase of their preparation.

“(He’ll be) more than ready,” said Roach, who is arriving in Manila tomorrow morning and immediately heading to General Santos City in time for Pacquiao’s afternoon workout, including a sparring session set for five or six rounds.

Pacquiao and Roach are pressured to come up with a stellar showing following back-to-back losses last year and Rios seems like the perfect opponent to bring back the luster of the 34-year-old Filipino star.

With his rugged and devil-may-care attitude, Rios appears to be somebody who can make Pacquiao look extra-ordinary in their scheduled 12-round welterweight match at the CotaiArena.

But in an interview with boxingscene, Rios also expressed optimism that the result will be in his favor.

“(My goal is to) send Manny Pacquiao into retirement,” said the underdog 27-year-old Rios, stressing that what Tim Bradley of the US and Juan Manuel of Mexico couldn’t do–force Pacquiao to hang up his gloves–will be accomplished next month in Macau.

“Out with the old, in with the new.”

According to oddsmakers, Pacquiao is a 3-1 favorite to prove Rios wrong. More Articles

Philippines’ ‘Transit’ emerges as front-runner for Busan film prize

October 07, 2013
A scene from the Philippines drama movie about OFWs in Israel, ‘Transit’.
BUSAN, Oct 7 ― An emotionally charged drama from the Philippines about migrant families fighting to stay together in Israel has emerged as a front-runner for the top prize at Asia’s premier film festival this week.

“Transit” from first-time director Hannah Espia has made it into the final field in the New Currents competition at the 18th Busan International Film Festival (BIFF).

The film explores the stories of five migrant families who decide to hide their children from authorities in Israel rather than abide by a controversial law ― introduced in the country in 2011 ― which forbids foreign workers from marrying or having children while on contract in the country.

“I wanted to show the lives of children born in foreign lands, and their struggles with identity,” Espia told a press conference.

“The [children] are the new people of the diaspora. They are in a constant search for where they belong,” said Espia, adding that she had been inspired to write the film after a chance meeting with a migrant worker who was bringing his five-month-old son home to live with relatives.

“Transit” has already caused a sensation in the Philippines, whose millions of overseas workers keep the economy afloat with dollar remittances.

Last month it selected the film as its entry for next year’s Academy Awards, after it won the major prize at the influential Cinemalaya festival in August, which celebrates the Philippines’ independent film.

Espia said she was proud that the film was receiving so much attention and that she hoped this would lead to it finding a wider international audience. Full Story
Now, it’s Manny’s turn

Now, it’s Manny’s turn

October 07, 2013
Freddie Roach got the job done in resuscitating Miguel Cotto’s career with the Puerto Rican rebounding from back-to-back losses to knock out Delvin Rodriguez at 0:18 of the third round in their lightmiddleweight fight in Orlando, Florida, last weekend.

Cotto let go of Cuban trainer Pedro Luis Diaz to hook up with Roach for his comeback fight. He was previously trained by his uncle Evangelista, Joe Santiago and Emanuel Steward. It was Santiago in Cotto’s corner when the Puerto Rican was stopped by Manny Pacquiao in 2009. Roach and Filipino assistant Marvin Somodio conspired to prepare Cotto for Rodriguez. Cotto reached out to Roach who took on the job after the fighter promised to work his butt off in the gym.

What Roach liked about Cotto was his willingness to do what he was told. In camp, Roach went back to basics to rediscover the Cotto of before, the body banger who hammered his way to world titles in the lightwelterweight, welterweight and lightmiddleweight divisions. Cotto committed himself to sacrifice and hard work. He knew this was a make-or-break situation. Another loss would likely end his career.

Against Rodriguez, Cotto was relentless from the start. He didn’t bother using the jab. Cotto pressured Rodriguez as soon as the bell rang for the first round. Rodriguez, who’s supposed to be no slouch, looked like he didn’t belong in the same ring. The Dominican Republic fighter never got to exploit his edge in height and reach. He ran scared the moment Cotto showed he meant business. Worse, Rodriguez was poorly coached. Instead of moving away from Cotto’s dynamite left, Rodriguez walked straight into it. Rodriguez’ lateral movement was to Cotto’s left, not right.  By Joaquin M. Henson (The Philippine Star) Full Story

Petron arranges finals duel with San Mig Coffee after ousting defending champs Rain or Shine

October 07, 2013
Petron's Marcio Lassiter waxed hot to push Petron
past the pesky Rain or Shine Elasto Painters. KC Cruz
The Petron Blaze Boosters blitzed the defending champs Rain or Shine Elastopainters in the third quarter en route to a 110-89 victory, Monday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum. With the win, the Boosters arranged a duel with the San Mig Coffee Mixers for the 2013 PBA Governors’ Cup title.

Rain or Shine had earlier forced a game four in the best-of-five series last Saturday, 92-87, but the overall number one seeds Petron made sure to close this one out, burying the Elasto Painters under a barrage of three-pointers.

The last time these two teams met in the Finals was way back in the 2000 PBA Governors’ Cup with the San Miguel Beermen winning over the Purefoods TJ Hotdogs four games to one. That series featured two of the most prolific imports of that era as the Jong Uichico-coached Beermen paraded Lamont Strothers while the Derrick Pumaren-helmed Hotdogs had Derrick Brown.

Leading by only six points at the half, the Boosters exploded early in the third quarter. Elijah Millsap and Alex Cabagnot combined for 28 points in the quarter to give the Boosters a lead that reached 25 points. The proud Elasto Painters tried to fight back even with key players injured, but their deficit was too steep for them to overcome.

“I’m very, very happy about this win,” said Petron head coach Gee Abanilla. “I give credit to the Rain or Shine organization. Even with some players injured, they fought tooth and nail and fought us to the limit.” Abanilla will make his first PBA Finals appearance in his very first conference as a head coach.

Millsap led the Boosters with 34 points and eight rebounds, while Cabagnot chipped in 23. Marcio Lassiter also had his best shooting game as a member of the Boosters. He totaled 27 points, connecting on 7-of-10 from three-point territory, most of which came when the Elasto Painters were threatening to make a comeback. Lassiter also added 12 rebounds.

“I just wanted to keep shooting until I missed. Tonight was just my night,” Lassiter said after the game. “The first two [triples], they helped off me so I kept shooting. This game I think they wanted to take away June Mar and they did it. I guess I was just ready.”

The Boosters led 6-5 when Beau Belga was called for a flagrant foul penalty one on Ronald Tubid at the 8:25 mark of the first. After two made free throws from Tubid, Gabe Norwood quickly replied with a fast break layup followed by a short jumper from Arizona Reid for a 9-8 ROS lead. Full Story

Stephan Schrock, Neil Etheridge lead Azkals’ defense of Philippine Football Peace Cup

The Philippine national men’s football team will be bolstered by its top international and local players when the Azkals defend their title in the 2013 Philippine Football Peace Cup at Panaad Stadium in Bacolod City this week.

With the tournament falling on FIFA match dates, the Azkals were able to secure the services of foreign-based stars Stephan Schrock, Neil Etheridge, Jerry Lucena, and Rob Gier.

Brothers Phil and James Younghusband of the Loyola Meralco Sparks and Chieffy Caligdong of Green Archers United Globe headline the local players tapped by Azkals coach Hans Michael Weiss.

Also joining the team are brothers Angel and Juani Guirado, Marwin Angeles, Misagh Bahadoran, Jerry Barbaso, Jeffrey Christiaens, Jason De Jong, Ed Sacapaño, Paul Mulders and Mark Hartmann of Global FC; Chris Greatwich and OJ Porteria of Kaya FC; Patrick Deyto of Green Archers; and Patrick Reichelt, who now plays in Thailand.

The Azkals will battle Chinese Taipei on Friday and Pakistan on October 15 for the Peace Cup, which the Filipinos won last year for their first title in almost a century. The two visiting squads face off on Saturday.

The Philippine Football Federation hopes that the Peace Cup could help promote peace and order throughout the country especially in Zamboanga, where a bloody standoff between Moro National Liberation Front fighters and government forces happened last September.

“The Peace Cup is football’s contribution to help highlight every Filipino’s desire for peace, especially in Mindanao conflict areas. Football values of fair play and respect are aligned with the ongoing peace process,” PFF secretary-general Ed Gastanes said.

Tickets for the match are pegged from P50 to P500 and can be bought at TicketWorld, The Planta Hotel and at the Panaad Stadium in Bacolod. Full Story

San Mig Coffee slays Meralco, secures Finals berth

October 07, 2013
The San Mig Coffee Mixers relied on lockdown defense in the endgame to defeat the Meralco Bolts, 79-73, on Sunday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum, putting them in the Finals of the PBA Governors Cup for a second straight season.

The Mixers led from start to finish, but they had to weather through a fierce rally from the Bolts late in the fourth quarter. Down 11 with eight minutes left in the game, Meralco rallied, led by their injured import Mario West, as Reynel Hugnatan got the Bolts to within a basket in the dying seconds of the game. However, Marqus Blakely found Mark Barroca wide open down low to give the Mixers a 77-73 lead that clinched their ticket to the Finals.

Blakely, who became the first import to lead his squad to back-to-back conference Finals, had another tremendous all-around game with 23 points, 19 rebounds, two assists, five steals, and a block. He also made two crucial free throws in the endgame to rob Meralco of their shot at a miraculous comeback.

“We just don’t know how to do it easy. We always have to make it harder for ourselves,” lamented San Mig Coffee head coach Tim Cone. “They put us at the edge of our seats. This goes to show how much fighting spirit Meralco has.”

James Yap saved his best performance in the semifinals for last, scoring 19 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the field. Gilas Pilipinas forward Marc Pingris also had a good game with 16 points and seven rebounds.

“Mario West was hurting but they powered through it. When they started with him, we thought he was just a decoy. He was taken out quickly but he played great when he returned,” Cone said. West didn’t score in the first quarter, but he still led his team when the final buzzer sounded with 22 points, while grabbing 17 rebounds.

The Mixers started the game by attacking the paint. Marqus Blakely and Marc Pingris earned easy baskets inside for a 6-0 lead. The Bolts got their first point of the match at the 8:01 mark of the first after a free throw from Jared Dillinger.

The Mixers then replied with a 7-0 blast from Blakely and James Yap to lead, 13-1. The Bolts got some offense going, but Blakely continued to beast inside. The import slammed home a PJ Simon miss to give San Mig Coffee a 20-8 lead with 4:13 left in the first.

Mark Cardona was then inserted into the game to give the Bolts an extra option on offense. He scored six straight to cut San Mig Coffee's lead to eight, but Mark Barroca ended the first with a triple for a 27-16 count.

“Coach Ryan [Gregorio] coached a really, really good game tonight. He coached better than I did,” said a gracious Cone after the game. “They just ran into some bad luck getting Mario West injured.” Aside from West, Cliff Hodge played hurt as he was limited to only 12 minutes in the game. But even with two of their top guys not feeling 100 percent, the Bolts gallantly fought back.

Cardona scored 13 points in only 19 minutes of play for the Bolts while Reynel Hugnatan added 13 points and 12 rebounds. Chris Ross was the surprise of the game as he played 29 minutes after barely getting any floor time in the past games. The do-it-all court general ended with nine points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals.

Mario West, injured shoulder and all, made his presence felt in the second quarter. He scored on a long jumper followed by an and-one play to cut the Mixers' lead to six at 29-23.

The action heated up at the 5:29 mark as Jay-R Reyes was called for a technical foul for hitting Blakely behind the head after play was halted. Barroca converted on the free throw and Yap followed up with a three for a 39-29 San Mig Coffee lead.

Chris Ross and West then conspired to get the Bolts closer. However, the Mixers still led 45-38 at the half. Full Story

Rhian Ramos reunites with her Stairway to Heaven leading men in 'Genesis'

October 07, 2013
Kapuso actress Rhian Ramos is all geared up for her major teleserye comeback via the adventure-drama series Genesis. Excited din si Rhian dahil aside from playing a lead role ay muli niyang makakasama ang mga nakatrabaho niya sa Stairway to Heaven na sina Dingdong Dantes, TJ Trinidad at Direk Joyce Bernal. GMANetwork.com had the chance to interview her during the show's pictorial, where she candidly shared about her preparations and how she feels about being part of this grand project.
"Very good, parang walang nagbago. It's still the same working relationship that I came to know before na just very professional. We just stick to our jobs. If ever we talk, we talk about our scenes," describes Rhian of her working relationship with Dingdong.

She adds, "At saka it's not only me reuniting with him but also with Direk Joyce [Bernal] amd with Jay Cruz who also worked in Stairway to Heaven, and TJ. Ayun nga, we're Team Stairway. We're back! Plus one na, so we're even better kasi nandito na si Direk Mark [Reyes]."

Rhian also expressed her feelings about being part of Genesis. "It's very exciting, at saka siyempre I'm always into something new, something different. Naniniwala kasi ako na parang there's nothing anymore in art na hindi pa nagagawa. Parang feeling ko lahat nagawa na, we just do different versions of it. So parang when there's something that's kind of different na hindi pa natin nasusubukan dito sa Pilipinas, I get really excited about it. And I feel really lucky to be part of it."

How did she prepare for her role as Raquel?

"I had a lot of help naman because it's so different kasi from my last character in Indio. So I had a lot of help from Jay, our acting coach, he is always on the set. Basically naman kasi when you read the script, medyo you get a feel na rin for the character and who she is. Pero we just worked on the small things that really make a person real, and put together a person's personality. We talk about it, we do a lot of talking about it. Sometimes even in our recent tapings, we're still not done talking about it. 'Yung in between scenes, we'll be like 'Labas muna tayo.' And we'll just sit outside in the parking lot and really talk more about the character. We're endlessly talking about it."  Full Story

Enzo Pineda gives credit to 'SAS' in rekindling romance with Louise Delos Reyes

October 07, 2013
"We're exclusively dating."

We had a chance to talk to the young Kapuso actor during the party, where he candidly shared what made him decide to give love a second chance.

"Magkasama kami sa Ligang iLike. Doon yata nagsimula eh. Rather than having space, we're always seeing each other sa mga meetings so ayun, hindi nakatiis. Kapag hindi nakatiis, ganun talaga. Kapag kasama mo lagi, hindi mo rin talaga makakalimutan," says Enzo.

Dalawang taon din ang itinagal ng relasyon nina Enzo at Louise before they broke up early this year. Mutual decision daw nila ito at mas nais nilang mag-concentrate sa kani-kanilang career. It was during that time that Enzo was busy with Kakambal Ni Eliana while Louise was doing Mundo Mo'y Akin with Alden Richards.

Nagkaroon ba ng ilangan sa pagitan nila?

"There were times pero may pinagsamahan kami and I don't want to be a bad guy na parang 'oh, wala na kami.' Siyempre, I've grown as a person, as a man, because of her," sagot ni Enzo.

He adds, "Marami kaming na-experience na mga bagay-bagay, problems in life, na na-solve namin. Nag-mature ako dahil sa kanya, and I'm really thankful."

The Dormitoryo star also shared his birthday wish for Louise, who turned 21 last September 1. "More happiness, more love, siguro more success in her career. She's doing great sa career niya. I just want her to stay the same, and keep on doing what she loves doing kasi doon siya nag-eexcel. I hope mas marami pa siyang ma-achieve sa career niya."

Abangan si Enzo Pineda sa Sunday All Stars, at sa Dormitoryo bilang Burn Chavez. Keep on visiting GMANetwork.com for updates on Enzo and other Kapuso stars. Full Story

Why Amy left TV5

October 07, 2013
TV5 Management and Ms. Amy Perez have mutually agreed to part ways. TV5 respects the decision of Ms. Perez to leave the Network due to personal reasons. She had been a valuable talent of TV5. We wish her well and the best of luck in all her endeavors.

The statement is right, straight to the point, no ifs or buts.

The parting happened at a time when Amy’s well-loved show Face To Face was being reformatted, with Amy suddenly out of the picture, replaced by Tintin Bersola as co-host of Gelli de Belen who moonlighted for Amy when Amy went on a maternity leave. Soon, Amy will surely also fade out from the Good Morning Club of the Kapatid early-morning news program.

Sad, isn’t it? A lot of people (this one included) will miss Amy who is the perfect host for a show like Face To Face where a cool and composed “referee” is required to stop the protagonists from actually killing each other. Amy would have been a perfect foil to Gelli who, I should add, has amply lived up to her new image as Ate Gelli. It remains to be seen how Tintin will fare on the show.

It’s unfair for Amy to be subjected to nasty rumors that she’s hard to work with, hard to deal with, so on and so forth.

“First,” an Amy defender told Funfare in a phone interview yesterday, “I must tell you that the TV5 management and Amy parted ways amicably, naghiwalay sila ng maayos. Amy has nothing but respect for Ma’am Wilma (Galvante) and MVP. I have to correct the impression that there was a misunderstanding between management and Amy dahil daw nag-i-inarte si Amy. Hindi po ganoon si Amy.”

Funfare learned that Amy and her manager Boy Abunda were negotiating with management for the renewal of her three-year contract which expired last May. Unfortunately, the negotiation got caught in the changes of department heads, until the unsavory items against Amy started cropping up initially as blind items in the tabs.

Did Amy really demand that a certain Face To Face staffer be kicked out?

“Amy is not the type of person who would want anybody to lose her job,” explained Amy’s defender. “Hindi siya ganoong klaseng tao; hindi siya pinalaki ng mga magulang siya na mang-api ng ibang tao. Look, 43 na si Amy, nanay na at hindi na bagay sa kanya ang high-school kind of away.” Full Story
