Aiza Seguerra Engaged to Girlfriend Liza Dino

February 09, 2014
Congratulations to Aiza Seguerra and fiancée Liza Dino! Dino said yes to Seguerra’s romantic proposal on Friday February 7. It looks like Seguerra’s proposal was well-thought out because she did so during the play “Kung Paano Maghihiwalay” at Teatro Hermogenes Ylagan in University of the Philippines, Diliman.

According to Dino Seguerra set up everything and she thought they were only acting together in a fundraising play. She believed it so because they also had rehearsals.

It was at the end of the performance when Seguerra went down on bended knees and popped out the huge sapphire and diamond ring.

A video posted by the couple’s friend shows an overwhelmed Dino when she realized what was happening. Seguerra went teary-eyed when Dino said yes and the crowd cheered. Seguerra’s parents, who were also in the audience, were smiling and clapping for the couple.

Dino said they haven’t made any plans yet about the wedding. In any case, they’ll probably do it abroad where same-sex marriage is allowed.

As a bit of background, Dino is a beauty titlist and a former line cook at Spago in Hollywood. She also won best actress at the International Film festival Manhattan for her role in the 2012 indie film “Compound” by Will Fredo.

Ateneo, UP Shifting to August-May Academic Calendar

February 09, 2014
Ateneo de Manila University and University of the Philippines will shift their academic calendars from August to May. UP Diliman is still undecided whether to adapt the new calendar. The university will hold a stakeholders consultation on February 10 to further discuss the matter.

Ateneo’s Board of Trustees approved the shift on February 5 and the school immediately shared the news on its Facebook page. The shift will be implemented starting the school year 2015-2016. However, Ateneo Grade School and High School are not included in the shift.

Ateneo has many partners overseas and it wants to align its calendar with these partners. Furthermore, Ateneo de Manila University President Ramon T. Villarin SJ said, “Ateneo needs to ensure that our graduates develop a global outlook and global competencies so that they can navigate a more complex, interconnected world and contribute towards resolving global concerns.”

Villarin also stated that this new academic calendar will help collaborative programs and research.

Also, this change in the schedule was not a spur of the moment decision. Ateneo conducted an internal study and intensive consultation for eight months. The reason why they’re implementing the new schedule in 2015 is because there are still some concerns and adjustments that need to be dealt with.

As for the University of the Philippines, its 7 constituent units namely UP Manila, UP Baguio, UP Visayas (Iloilo, Miagaom and Tacloban), UP Mindanao, UP Open University and UP Cebu are all ready to shift to the new school calendar.

Like Ateneo, UP is shifting the school calendar in order to be more globally competitive.

Flappy Bird the Latest Addictive Mobile Game

February 05, 2014
Move over Candy Crush! “Flappy Bird” is the new mobile game that’s taking the world by storm!
With its huge eyes, heavy lips and tiny wings, “Flappy Bird” is marking its appeal to iOS and Android device owners. This game’s rise to fame has been phenomenal since it was launched in May last year by Vietnam-based company Gears Studio. It was developed by Dong Nguyen who is based in Hanoi.

According to mobile app marketing firm Distimo, “Flappy Bird” is now No. 1 in 100 countries. It is also No. 1 for the iPhone in 88 countries and iPad in 77 countries. For Android, it is No. 1 in 11 countries. Apparently, it is now being downloaded 2-3 million times per day.
Based on its description on Google Play, “Flappy Bird” is not a complex game to play. It just says “Flap your wings to fly.” The mechanics is tap to flap your wings to fly, avoid pipes and try to get 4 medals (bronze, silver, gold and platinum).

It may seem simple but it is actually tricky to master. Many have expressed their frustration about not being able to get past a level but still, they can’t seem to stop playing it. Those who have played it testify that it’s very addictive.

Have you tried “Flappy Bird?”

Deniece Cornejo’s Rape Case Not Supported by Women’s Groups

February 05, 2014
Women’s groups won’t have anything to do with Deniece Cornejo’s rape case. Christina Palabay of the women’s group Tanggol Bayi has made it clear that they will not get involved in Cornejo’s case. The reason she gave was that Cornejo as well as all the actors involved in the matter are capable of hiring lawyers to defend them in court.

Palabay further said that they’d rather concentrate their support on the predicament of disadvantaged women, specifically “those who have less in life and those who were rendered voiceless in the legal system and in society- for they are the ones who deserve our unequivocal support.”
Even the women’s rights group Gabriella won’t give their support at this point in time; although Cornejo hasn’t approached them yet.

Gabriella’s Bim dela Paz said that as a policy their group doesn’t give out any kind of statement unless they have first-hand knowledge about a case. They don’t use news reports as basis because the versions are usually different or incomplete.

In the event that Cornejo does ask for their support dela Paz said “we’ll cross the bridge when we get there.”

Philip Seymour Hoffman Dies from Suspected Drug Overdose

February 03, 2014
Hollywood has lost another brilliant actor. Philip Seymour Hoffman, 46, was found dead in his apartment in New York City on Sunday, February 2. Apparently, he died from drug overdose. His body was found in the bathroom with a needled full of heroin stuck in his arm.

His body was discovered by his friend David Katz. Katz was asked by Hoffman’s long-time partner Mimi O’Donnell to check on the actor after he failed to get his three children Copper, Tallulah and Willa that day. Hoffman and O’Donnell recently separated.

According to reports, investigators found his apartment littered with what they call as “Ace of Spades” heroin. It’s a very deadly type of heroin that contains the opiate fentanyl, which is given to cancer patients. This heroin is also known as Ace of Hearts, Bud Ice, Income Tax and Theraflu. It hasn’t been seen in New York since 2008.

Despite the evidences found in Hoffman’s person and in his apartment, his body will still undergo autopsy and result is expected on Monday.

People who saw him a few days before his death say that the actor looked terrible. He was sweaty and had this pasty complexion. Even when he attended the Sundance film festival last January 19, Hoffman didn’t look too well. He didn’t give any interview either. Turns out that would be his last red carpet appearance.

Hoffman’s family is devastated but they thanked everyone for their love and support. They also ask for privacy during this time of grief.

Hoffman won an Oscar and a Golden Globe in 2005 for his movie “Capote.”

Pinoys Can Now Apply for Working Holiday Visa to New Zealand

February 03, 2014
A newly-signed agreement between the Philippines and New Zealand gives their citizens the opportunity to work or study for one whole year. Filipinos can go and stay in New Zealand for one year under the working holiday scheme (WHS). This also gives the same privilege to New Zealanders who want to visit the Philippines whether for vacation, study or temporary work.

The scheme will take effect starting February 5, 2014. By then, Filipinos and new Zealanders between 18 to 30 years old will be able to apply for the WS visa. This was signed by Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert F. Del Rosario and Minister of Foreign Affairs Murray McCully. President Benigno S. Aquino III and Prime Minister John Key were witnesses to the signing last October 23, 2013 in Wellington.

Those who are granted the WHS visa have the option to train or study for a maximum of three months or work for one year with a limit of three months in one employer. Once the 12-month entry visa ends, they would have to leave the country.

Not many will be able to avail of this new scheme since only 100 visas will be issued per year to successful Filipino applicants. The same number applies to New Zealand applicants.

Filipinos who are interested in applying for the WHS visa must:
  • have a passport from the Republic of the Philippines that is valid for at least three months after your planned departure from New Zealand
  • be at least 18 and not more than 30 years old
  • not bring children with you
  • hold a return ticket, or sufficient funds to purchase such a ticket
  • have a minimum of NZ$4,200 available funds to meet your living costs while you are here
  • meet health and character requirements
  • hold medical and comprehensive hospitalisation insurance for the length of your stay
  • have a tertiary qualification granted in respect of a minimum of three years’ full-time university study
  • have a level of proficiency in English that is assessed as at least functional
  • be coming to New Zealand to holiday, with work or study being secondary intentions for your visit, and
  • not have been approved a visa under a working holiday scheme before.

Deniece Cornejo, Vhong Navarro, Cedric Lee Controversy

February 01, 2014
Deniece Cornejo is back on social media where she says she’s ready to stand and fight for her right as a victim. On Friday, just two days after she filed a rape case against Vhong Navarro, the 22-year-old posted two photos with significant statements concerning the controversial incident involving her, Cedric Lee’s group and Navarro.

Her first post on her realdeniece Instagram account has this message, “Kung ako instrumento upang maging ehemplo sa mga kababaihan na maging matatag sa naabuso, nasasaktan at nasasamantalahan. Paglalaban ko at paninindigan. - Deniece Cornejo.”

The second photo says, “Sa larangan ng batas, walang sikat at maimpluwensya. Tayo ay pantay pantay lamang. – Deniece Cornejo.”

These photos were for her 26,000 followers to see.

Cornejo and businessman Cedric Lee were named by Navarro as the people behind his attack last January 22, 2014. The Showtime host filed criminal charges against Cornejo, Lee and seven others.

After the controversy broke, Cornejo shared her side of the story and also filed a complaint-affidavit wherein she asserted that Navarro forced her to oral sex on him and after that he tried to insert his penis into her vagina. It was in that instant that Lee and his group arrived and “rescued” her.

Navarro denied that he tried to rape Cornejo; instead he claimed that he was a victim of extortion. After Lee and his group violently attacked him and supposedly took videos of him without his underwear, Lee told him that he should pay Cornejo 200,000 pesos. But in the entire time Navarro was with them, that amount increased to 500,000, 1,000,000 to 2,000,000 pesos. When the demand got to the 2M mark, Navarro said he did not have that kind of money, so Lee went back to the 1M demand.

Navarr has filed charges against Cornejo and Lee’s group. Among the charges he filed are serious physical injuries, grave threat, grave coercion, unlawful arrest, blackmail, and serious illegal detention.

The case continues.
