ABS-CBN Files over $8 Million Lawsuit VS Website for Piracy

February 22, 2017
ABS-CBN Corporation filed a lawsuit before the US Federal District Court against a website for damages over $8 million – they filed this on February 17, 2017, Friday. It was said that this website kissasian.com was found to be rebroadcasting their TV shows and movies which are to be around 27 in total.

The network giant said that this action is the start of changing things especially in the anti-piracy enforcement in 2017.

"These pirate sites often victimize our fans when they access these sites and are later attacked by malware which steals their financial and personal data. We are going after every pirate wherever they live and operate; we arrested and sued numerous pirates last year and we plan to quadruple that effort this year,” said by Elisha Lawrence, ABS-CBN’s Assistant Vice President of Global Anti-Piracy.

Aside from the website, which was asked to pay at $1 million each in statutory damages, there are numerous websites: pnoytambayantv.com and freepinoychannel.com that support piracy and were asked to pay at least $1.18 million in damages in relation to information and copyright infringement while pinoynetwork.to, lambingan.to, and tambaytayo.com are leashed to pay for at least $1.08 million each.

Why do you think they were sued? Well they provide full-length episodes and seasons of the movies and TV shows that we patronize in ABS-CBN. Unfortunately, there have been reports and complaints that revolve around the stealing of data from the people who access the website.

"Defendants' websites are classic examples of pirate operations, often with poor quality," said Lawrence.

“These pirates are willfully infringing ABS-CBN's copyrighted works and damaging the ABS-CBN brand. We invest a great deal in our television shows and movies so the customers have a superior viewing experience,” she added

It is indeed a great dwell on the fact that copyright infringement is now being seriously followed. So for us, it is imperative that we strictly comply with rules and regulations even if it is only done online because who knows, maybe someone is already watching you.

PHILVOCS Warns West Valley Fault Residents: “Prepare For The Big One”

February 22, 2017

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHILVOCS) Director Renato Solidum advised people to get ready for the dangerous earthquake that is caused by the West Valley Fault and would likely to hit particularly those living in Metro Manila and the nearby provinces.

The shocking 6.7 magnitude earthquake that shook the province of Surigao del Norte is one of the deadliest quakes that took place in the province, even in the country. It left hundreds of wounded persons, even fatalities. They have recorded more than 150 aftershocks as of Monday morning, two after the 6.7 intensity. The highest aftershock was with a magnitude of 4.1.

This quake have resulted the Philippine fault line to move and is expected anytime soon at around 7.2 intensity. This would happen in the greater part of Metro Manila. The government particularly the disaster officials have released detailed maps which shows the danger zones that could help those affected areas to prepare.

According to Japan International Cooperation Agency for PHILVOCS and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), this earthquake would wipe out up to 34,000 people and can injure 100,000 more because of disintegrated buildings and structures.

There were reports that there are cracks on some houses and structures that are included in the fault line. Aside from that, some say that they noticed their houses seem to be submerging gradually.

Solidum informed the people to be extra vigilant if similar event happens. He also added that everyone must learn from the current consequences of the magnitude 6.7 earthquake in Surigao del Norte.

It was estimated that the fault line moves every 400 years and the last huge quake transpired in 1658, which was 357 years ago to be exact. Affected areas were parts of Quezon City, Makati, Pasig, Taguig, Bulacan, Marikina, and Muntinlupa in Metro Manila. It also traveled on some parts of Cavite, General Mariano Alvarez, and Silang. Also in Laguna, San Pedro, Binan, Sta. Rosa, Cabuyao and Calamba.

There were reports that areas near Marikina Valley to the area of Manila Bay are prone to experience tremors because this land sits on a soft soil.

Each one of us must prepare for the coming of this “Big One,” we don’t know when? Nevertheless, we have to get ready.

Student Discipline and Teacher Protection Act (House Bill No. 5735)

February 15, 2017
ACT Teachers Party List Representative Rep. Antonio Tinio passed the House Bill 5735, Student Discipline and Teacher Protection Act, which requires the Department of Education (DepEd) to issue policies and principles on student discipline and classroom management.

Antonio L. Tinio, Author of House Bill No. 5735 / DepEd Tambayan

According to Tinio, “While child protection is indispensible, teacher protection is also a must… this bill seeks to lay down institutionalized support mechanism for teachers and school personnel in matters of classroom management and student discipline…”

This is factual, as there have always been situations that teachers, either private or public, and other school personnel are being bullied and those are beyond teacher’s control. The teachers most especially, are mainly the person behind every student’s build and literacy.

In public schools, it would be very intricate to inculcate discipline inside the classroom because of the large class size; not to mention the multiple shifts each day. Therefore, the teachers are not only obliged to instill proper discipline to students, yet the parents are the main accountable in shaping the child’s personality. The characters of each student are first learned at home but in some instances, teachers still get blame if students misbehave.

Before, punishments to students who misbehave in class would be sent in the corner and will be asked to do community service and on some cases they are slapped on their wrist. However, those were stopped especially after the Child Protection Policy was implemented.

This bill mandates DepEd to issue and implement student manual with the school’s rules and regulations to be observed by students with respect to fellow students and school personnel and property. They are also providing pre-service and in-service training for DepEd personnel on child behavior and psychology, classroom management techniques, positive discipline, and other related fields.

It is recommending the schools to have the ratio of at least one guidance counselor for every 200 students for public elementary and high schools.

With this, it would be very clear that not only students should be given enough and needed protection as far as misconduct is concerned but the teachers as well. No matter what anyone says, it is the teachers who remain defenseless in the face of intimidating parents and students. This is one way of raising the dignity and respect of most teachers who only do good things and would also be a great change in students’ behavior towards adults, particularly, teachers.

Jollibee Commercials: Bida ang “Sawi”?

February 10, 2017
If you were to be asked, what is a commercial? In a professional and personal perspective, commercials or advertisements are utilized in order to let the people “be aware” of what you offer, correct? They are made to publicize a certain company or a certain item so that people who see them know about them. But what if these commercials or advertisements somehow hit you right in the chest, really really hard?

Local fast food dinosaur Jollibee had people crawling from the social media boards buzzing overnight up until today because of the two (2) Valentine’s day-themed videos released on both their Facebook and YouTube accounts. It was first released on the 9th of February, 2017 last Thursday and can you believe that up until now, people are still talking and feeling it?

One of the videos, entitled “Crush,” tells the story of a boy who leaves burgers yums as anonymous for his high school crush. He then ended up hurting since he sees the girl with another man who is obviously more attractive than. The story comes with a twist so be sure to watch it.

“Vow,” on the other hand makes its viewers believe that the man who is talking is about to marry the woman of his dreams. As the video progresses, the plot revolves around their story and how they got to the church.

Both videos made the fast food giant an overnight trend beating the good old #ALDUB82ndWeeksary trend.

This is Jollibee’s way of greeting everyone of us a good and merry Valentine’s Day; although it didn’t actually made us all “kilig,” at least they showed their creativeness and their enthusiasm in their work this 2017. The Jollibee Valentine’s Ads is a great indication that we are all still human – that we can still feel hurt, loved, even empathize with what we are watching.

The fast food megaton opened the doors of challenge, idea, creativity, and execution to all other fast food chains here in our country and maybe all over the world. Who knows, maybe we see more versions and stories in the following months.

What is an Online Voucher for K11 - K12?

February 07, 2017
There is this “An Act Enhancing the Philippines Basic Education System by Strengthening Its Curriculum and Increasing the Number of Years for Basic Education, Appropriating Funds Therefore and for Other Purposes,” which is also known as Republic Act No. 10533 or the Enhance Basic Education Act of 2013. This was passed by the Congress on January 30, 2013 and was approved by Former President Benigno Aquino III.

What is an Online Voucher for K11 - K12?

The K to 12 programs covers pre- schooling and 12 years of basic education. This comprises six years of Primary or Elementary Education, four years of Junior High and two years of Senior High.

Most people are against this law because the added two years would only mean financial burden to parents who can barely afford to send their children to school. In addition, to some the added two years will allow students to learn their lessons with mastery, thereby ensuring the global competitiveness in the end.

Acquiring this program would also mean having fewer units in college particularly the general subjects because these were already taken in K11 to 12.

The Department of Education (DepEd) formulates programs to enact the provision law. Moreover, under DepED Order no. 11 the Senior High School Voucher Program (SHS VP) was introduced, therefore providing financial assistance to senior high students. The Private Education Assistance Committee (PEAC), which was headed by the Secretary of Education, Leonor Briones, provides financial assistance to both public and private sector.

Every student who happens to finish Grade 10 by March 2017 is eligible to apply for SHS VP. However, Grade 10 students from public schools are automatically a Voucher Program Beneficiary. In addition to that, Grade 10 students from private schools are also a voucher program beneficiary if those schools are part of the Education Service Contracting (ESC) program of DepEd. ESC program contracts private schools to provide education to “would-have-been” public school students. Students who are not eligible as recipient of the voucher however, need to undergo an application and screening procedure.

Here are the steps to follow in applying the Senior High Voucher Program for SY 2017-2018.

1. The student who wants to avail the voucher program must CREATE AN ACCOUNT
  • Go to site ovap.deped.gov.ph
  • Click “Apply Now” button
  • Click the ink that will be sent through email to have the account activated.
2. Answer correctly the Application Form
  • Login to ovap.deped.gov.ph using the account you created
  • Fill up all the form
  • After completing the form, kindly check your mail to download and print the CONFIRMATION SLIP.
3. Submit all the necessary supporting documents.
Results will be release on the 2nd quarter of 2017 by DepEd. The Qualified Voucher certificate can be downloaded through the OVAP account by the successful applicants.

BDO to charge Php10 for BDO to BDO transfers

February 02, 2017
If we are to list down the most famous and most accessible banks here in our country, what names would you say? Banco De Oro (BDO)? Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI)? Those two, right? A few days ago, BDO made an announcement that sort of shocked the whole nation. It’s not about big money, but in comparison with what they’ve had before, it is kind of a big deal.

BDO Charge 10 Pesos Transaction fee

BDO sent a notification to all its members and subscribers earlier last month that they are now going to collect “transfer fees” even on BDO to BDO transactions. Right now, as you know, BDO to BDO transactions do not have any charges, right? But this shift will incur a P10. 00 charge to BDO to BDO transactions which will start at March 15, 2017. BDO will also be increasing its daily limits to P50, 000.00.

Most people who are in the banking system are aware of the benefit of same bank-to-bank transactions – and this benefit is that you are not obliged to pay for extra fees since it is under the same bank (intra-charge) – as compared to a different bank (inter-bank).

From BDO “We are pleased to announce that effective March 15, 2017, BDO Online and Mobile Banking customers will enjoy higher limits for Send Money to Any BDO Account and Send Money to a Paycode transactions. The new daily limit will be increased to Php 50,000.00.

Starting March 15, 2017, a fee of Php10.00 will be charged on all Send Money to Any BDO Account and Send Money to a Paycode transactions. You may still enjoy these transactions free of charge until March 14, 2017.”

What do you think about this new change? Would having this fee be effective enough to sustain banking needs? Would this fund be enough to innovate new deals and promises that BDO can give to its banking subscribers?

AN UPDATE FROM 1/31/2017; 6:13 PM PST

BDO has issued this advisory on Facebook: “Fund transfer to enrolled BDO accounts will remain free of charge. The new transaction fee shall only apply to Send Money to Any BDO Account and Send Money to a Paycode transactions. You may continue to enjoy free of charge fund transfer transactions by enrolling the destination account in your Online Banking account.”

With this update, it is now clear to us that it is not the raw BDO-to-BDO transactions but Send Money to Any BDO Account and Send Money to Paycode Transactions would be affected.
