Ateneo’s Board of Trustees approved the shift on February 5 and the school immediately shared the news on its Facebook page. The shift will be implemented starting the school year 2015-2016. However, Ateneo Grade School and High School are not included in the shift.
Villarin also stated that this new academic calendar will help collaborative programs and research.
Also, this change in the schedule was not a spur of the moment decision. Ateneo conducted an internal study and intensive consultation for eight months. The reason why they’re implementing the new schedule in 2015 is because there are still some concerns and adjustments that need to be dealt with.
As for the University of the Philippines, its 7 constituent units namely UP Manila, UP Baguio, UP Visayas (Iloilo, Miagaom and Tacloban), UP Mindanao, UP Open University and UP Cebu are all ready to shift to the new school calendar.
Like Ateneo, UP is shifting the school calendar in order to be more globally competitive.
