Ateneo, UP Shifting to August-May Academic Calendar

Ateneo de Manila University and University of the Philippines will shift their academic calendars from August to May. UP Diliman is still undecided whether to adapt the new calendar. The university will hold a stakeholders consultation on February 10 to further discuss the matter.

Ateneo’s Board of Trustees approved the shift on February 5 and the school immediately shared the news on its Facebook page. The shift will be implemented starting the school year 2015-2016. However, Ateneo Grade School and High School are not included in the shift.

Ateneo has many partners overseas and it wants to align its calendar with these partners. Furthermore, Ateneo de Manila University President Ramon T. Villarin SJ said, “Ateneo needs to ensure that our graduates develop a global outlook and global competencies so that they can navigate a more complex, interconnected world and contribute towards resolving global concerns.”

Villarin also stated that this new academic calendar will help collaborative programs and research.

Also, this change in the schedule was not a spur of the moment decision. Ateneo conducted an internal study and intensive consultation for eight months. The reason why they’re implementing the new schedule in 2015 is because there are still some concerns and adjustments that need to be dealt with.

As for the University of the Philippines, its 7 constituent units namely UP Manila, UP Baguio, UP Visayas (Iloilo, Miagaom and Tacloban), UP Mindanao, UP Open University and UP Cebu are all ready to shift to the new school calendar.

Like Ateneo, UP is shifting the school calendar in order to be more globally competitive.
