Triple Pay for Workers on April 9th, as per the Wage Commission

Have you ever experienced a triple pay? Well, it seems highly unlikely but it actually is possible. In fact, it happens once every few years because of the realignment of days which leads to double holidays on one (1) day. That basically means that you’d need to work on a holiday.

Working on a holiday is something that some workers look forward to; they feel like it’s a treat. Some, if not most, will surely take this opportunity because according to the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), those workers who will report on a holiday, shall receive two hundred (200) percent of their daily income for the first eight (8) hours of work.

Moreover, they shall receive another thirty (30) percent for work in excess of eight (8) hours. Most of the workers would usually take advantage of it in order to get that shiny bonus to be able to sustain their daily needs.

On the 9th of April, 2020, we usually celebrate the Araw ng Kagitingan. This is the day we observe this holiday in commemoration of the fall of Bataan in the recent World War II (WW II). Employees who will report on this date are eligible to receive triple pay, as stated by the National Wages and Productivity Commission (NWPC).

Because Araw ng Kagitingan and Maundy Thursday fall in one day…

The Proclamation No. 845 signed by President Rodrigo Duterte last November states April 9; which will fall on a Thursday, is a double regular holiday. It’s going to be observed as the Bataan Day or the Araw ng Kagitingan and Maundy Thursday (Mahal na araw).

NWPC made a mention of this that if workers attend work, they shall receive 300% more of their total daily rate.

If you report to work, you are entitled to 300% of your daily wage rate.”

What about employees who would rest in this date?

Employees who would experience a rest day on this date, however, were given the instruction that if they choose to work during this day, they shall receive a total of an additional 390% of their regular pay. Yes, they can receive that much if they choose to work on that date.

The night or the graveyard shifter employees during the double holiday shall receive 330% and those who will work overtime during the double holiday shall receive a total of 390% pay.

Yes, that’s how big workers can get if their schedules are not the regular office hours!

Would there be no complimentary pays?

One thing we should always take note of is that people who work in the graveyard shift or in the night shift also receives extra. There also are complimentary additional pays for those who would take night shift and work overtime on the double holiday.

These are the sample computations of a double pay as stated in DOLE’s 2010 Handbook on Worker’s Statutory Monetary Benefits; they are as follows:

Work on

Pay Equals

Double holiday

Double holiday falling on a rest day

390% or 3.9

Double holiday, night shift

3 x 1.1 = 3.3 or 330%
Double holiday, rest day, night shift

3.9 x 1.1 = 4.29 or 429%

Double holiday, overtime

3.9 or 390%
Double holiday, rest day, overtime

3.9 x 1.3 = 5.07 or 507%

Double holiday, night shift, overtime

3 x 1.1 x 1.3 = 4.29
Double holiday, rest day, night shift, overtime

3.9 x 1.1 x 1.3 = 5.577 266.30

For the time being, those who will not report to work are entitled to 200% of their daily wage, indefinitely.

So what’s the final verdict?

The final verdict all depends on the situation; should you be an employee who would want a huge chunk of extra pay on your salary for that time period, by all means, proceed and take on the extra work.

However, try and gauge the situation, too. If you think you won’t be able to make it because of some personal or health issues, don’t take the risk – just rest.

The triple pay is something that we Filipinos love because it’s one thing that can help us jack up a few inches of our compensation by doing almost nothing; just attending work or having an extra day of work.

Filipino workers are known for their work perseverance. Not all employees or workers’ wages are enough to sustain their daily needs, especially for breadwinners of their family. Surely, they will grab this opportunity.

How about you? Have you decided whether or not you’ll attend work on April 9th, 2020? Were you able to decide your fate? It’s about a few months from now so you actually still have the chance to decide on it; however, it’s best if you decide early so you can reserve a slot if you wish to work on that date.
